MOM, I’M GAY! – The hilarious coming out musical returns to Philly
MOM, I’M GAY! – a musical comedy about one mother’s vain pursuit to find a husband for her lesbian daughter— will be seen once again in Philadelphia. This time, new and old fans, the African-American and LGBT communities and supporters, along with anyone who likes to laugh and is willing to learn are invited to see the show from March 20th to the 22nd at The Painted Bride Art Center. A portion of the proceeds from the four performances will benefit The Human Rights Campaign, Equality Advocates of Pennsylvania, and The William Way Community Center.
First performed back in 1987 at the Walnut Street Theatre to good reviews, the independent production takes on homophobia with humor— and in a way that is as relevant to today’s often painful coming out experiences as it was during its first run in Philadelphia and off-Broadway. Wilhemina A. Paulin, the show’s originator, said the revival comes after being bombarded with friendly requests to do so.
“When we first did MOM, I’M GAY! we were ahead of our time. This was long before Ellen DeGeneres came out on national TV. Now we’re being told that this is the time when MOM, I’M GAY! can make the greatest impact and reach a diversified audience,” said Paulin, a former columnist, jingle writer, and jazz and blues singer. “Though you will never see me in a picket line marching, you can see my advocacy and activism in MOM, I’M GAY! Writing this play has been my gift from God to be involved in the LGBT struggle. This is the cast I’ve dreamed and prayed for,” she said of the current production.
The show features an all African-American cast. The characters are Sugar- a lesbian seeking total acceptance from her bible-hugging mother, Mom- the homophobic mother who loves her daughter, and James – the show-stealing gay law school grad and Sugar’s childhood friend. The company’s musical direction for the play and cast album favorites including “Secret” and “Dash of Sugar” is handled by Freddie Paulin, Wilhemina’s husband.
A tour is in the planning stages for MOM, I’M GAY! The production company is currently considering new opportunities, venues, and investors.
